  • Combating Boredom: Creative Ideas to Keep Yourself and Your Crew Occupied While at Sea

Going on a long-term voyage away from port can be an exciting, but daunting prospect. A boat ride or a long-term crew assignment to sea can mean months away from civilization and all of its comforts, and even a long weekend at sea can seem like an eternity if you and your crew are bored. But have no fear, as there are plenty of creative ways to keep yourselves entertained. Here are some ideas to keep in mind during your next seafaring adventure.

    Learn Something New

Learning a new skill or language is a great way to pass the time and take advantage of the extra free time during your voyage. Courses, apps, and online programs can help crewmates learn something new, from vocabulary to more complicated skills. After a long day of travel, have a group lesson and make a game out of it. This will get your crew’s creative juices flowing and can help take the boredom out of long rides.

  • Dice Only Games

We are very sorry, but due to the complexity of this article, an audio version is not available.

It's easy for anyone, even the youngest of kids, to carry a handful of dice. Here's a selection of dice games that are easy to play and entertaining.

These games require only dice, and maybe a score pad, or other simple item (like a cup for Pirate's Dice). More intricate dice games requiring specialized equipment can be found in our Dice Plus Games.

Who says you need elaborate boards and intricate pieces to have a good time? With just a pair of dice, perhaps a charcuterie board and some fun cocktails, and, of course, a few good friends, you can host a memorable gathering in your home — or even make it a monthly tradition.

These dice games will help you throw an inexpensive and easy get together that will give you and your pals something to laugh over besides the latest trending TikTok, while also bringing out your competitive streak. And, I promise, these fun party games are all simple to learn — so you can focus on catching up rather than keeping track of rules.

These games use dice as the primary means of play, but often require more equipment than a simple score pad.

    Dungeons and Dragons

D&D is a tabletop role-playing game that takes a group on a grand adventure filled with danger, intrigue, and hard-choices, with the outcomes of many events being hinging on the roll of a die. The best way to learn how to play D&D is to join a group of experienced players. You'll need a good set of polyhedral dice to get started.

There is a good description of how to get started with D&D to be found here: Everything a First Time DND Player Needs to Have Fun.

  • Post-Apocalyptic Movies

We are very sorry, but due to the complexity of this article, an audio version is not available.

There are currently 102 titles on this list

Before I give you my list, I should explain my stance on post-apocalyptic entertainment.

Primarily, I like it realistic. I occasionally enjoy some simple action films (Mad Max), but mostly, they have to be an accurate representation of possible futures. You will find very few zombie movies on my list. Despite being a popular subject, zombies are just as realistic as vampires, demons, and similar fictitious creatures.

    Ratings:

    • Green: definitely watch this!
    • Yellow: it's okay, and has some good points. If you're bored, go for it.
    • Red: Maybe keep a copy in your fallout bunker. Watch them when you've been locked in for a few years, you'll be desperate for ANYTHING to end the relentless boredom!!
  • Post-Apocalyptic Songs

I have created two new post-apocalyptic songs, and made music videos for them. You can watch them both below.

The first song, "Sailing to Tomorrow", is about a bug-out after some disaster. In the music video, there's a short news clip about zombies, but in the song itself the scenario is nondescript.

The second song is "Sail Away (Zombies Can't Swim)", and is specifically about a zombie apocalypse. Personally, I think zombies are stupid, but I know they are a popular topic.
