Combating Boredom: Creative Ideas to Keep Yourself and Your Crew Occupied While at Sea

Going on a long-term voyage away from port can be an exciting, but daunting prospect. A boat ride or a long-term crew assignment to sea can mean months away from civilization and all of its comforts, and even a long weekend at sea can seem like an eternity if you and your crew are bored. But have no fear, as there are plenty of creative ways to keep yourselves entertained. Here are some ideas to keep in mind during your next seafaring adventure.

Learn Something New

Learning a new skill or language is a great way to pass the time and take advantage of the extra free time during your voyage. Courses, apps, and online programs can help crewmates learn something new, from vocabulary to more complicated skills. After a long day of travel, have a group lesson and make a game out of it. This will get your crew’s creative juices flowing and can help take the boredom out of long rides.

Let Your Imagination Wander

There is no better time to get lost in your own head than during a long ride at sea. Take some time alone to relax and let your mind wander. Sit with your eyes closed and imagine an entire story scenario or world and write it down if you’d like. This can be the start of a creative project, and can provide a great sense of accomplishment with its completion.

Organize Contests Among Your Crewmates

Contests can liven up a quiet voyage and create a feeling of camaraderie and competition. This can include simple tasks such as trivia or more physical activities. Even just playing a card game can pass the time. Create a prize and winner circle to make it even more enticing for your crew.

Plan A Shore Excursion

Taking a shore excursion to a nearby port or beach can breathe some fresh air and provide a much needed change of scenery during long trips. Even if you only have a day or a few hours of shore leave, it can be worthwhile to spend some time getting off the boat and exploring. This will also give your crew the chance to interact with locals and enjoy the local food and culture.

Don’t Forget To Pack Some Entertainment

Books, music, movies, and other comfort items are essential for any voyage and should be brought along. If you zone out or can’t keep your attention fixed for long, some of these items will no doubt distract and keep you occupied.

Take Downtime

An essential part of any voyage is having some downtime. Even something as simple as sitting and playing a game can still take your mind off of the passage and help you destress. This is important because it is easy to get overwhelmed or overstressed during long voyages. Unwinding can be achieved through simple activities such as taking walks, yoga, or even just chatting with crewmates.

Voyages at sea can be both long and demanding. Having creative ideas and activities to occupy your time and energy can make the experience much more enjoyable. The best way to do this is to first cover all the basics and ensure that you and your crew have the necessary resources to make the passage a successful one. With that groundwork laid, the next step is utilizing the open horizons and the opportunities that come with the open sea.

Hello fellow sea-farers,

Aria Winters here, single mom, survivalist, and proud owner of a 40-foot sloop. I deeply resonate with the sentiments expressed in this article. As a prepper, I've always valued the importance of mental resilience, and I can attest to the need for creativity in combating boredom at sea.

In my case, the challenge includes keeping my young daughter engaged. I've found that incorporating learning into everyday seafaring activities can be both fun and productive. For instance, mapping out our route with her not only teaches her navigation skills but also sparks her interest in geography. We've also started identifying stars and constellations during night watches, turning it into a celestial treasure hunt of sorts.

I particularly loved the suggestion to "let your imagination wander". Part of our routine involves creating imaginative tales about sea creatures and distant lands. It's a joy to watch my daughter's creativity bloom in the expansive solitude of the sea.

As for the contests, we have a running competition for who can spot unique marine life first. It's a simple activity but adds a layer of excitement to our days on the water.

I would add, however, that as much as we pack for entertainment, it’s crucial not to overlook the importance of packing for survival. A well-equipped first aid kit, ample fresh water storage, and emergency rations are just as important as your favorite book or board game. Also, if your boat is your bug-out location like mine is, consider practicalities like a water desalination system or solar panels.

In summary, while the sea offers a unique adventure, it also demands our respect and preparedness. So let's keep our spirits high and our vessels ready. To all my fellow sailors and survivalists, stay safe and enjoy the journey.

Great article! As a liveaboard and single mom of two, I can truly attest to the importance of keeping your crew, big or small, entertained at sea.

Your idea of learning something new is spot on. In our case, my kids and I have ventured into learning celestial navigation. It's practical, educational, and it transforms night watches into an exciting stargazing quest. We also love the idea of letting our imagination wander. We've started a tradition of storytelling sessions where we all take turns spinning tales of mythical sea creatures, deserted islands and daring sea voyages. It's not only entertaining but also a fun way to nourish their creativity and communication skills.

I couldn’t agree more on the importance of packing entertainment. We have an onboard library that includes a mix of adventure novels, survival handbooks, and children's books. Books are a great way to escape and learn, especially on those rainy days when you're cooped up below deck.

One more suggestion I'd like to make is incorporating routine into your voyage. It might sound mundane, but having a daily routine, like morning exercise, schoolwork, chores, and 'me time', helps keep things structured and less chaotic, especially when you're sailing with kids.

Lastly, I'd like to stress the significance of downtime. Living on a sailboat, the Sea Breeze, we are always at the mercy of Mother Nature. Storms, equipment breakdowns, or unexpected developments can bring stress, so embracing quiet moments of relaxation and reflection is crucial. Yoga, meditation, or simply gazing out at the endless blue, can do wonders for your mental well-being.

Remember, the sea is a vast playground and classroom. With a little creativity and a practical approach, boredom at sea can be easily combated. Happy sailing! #sealife #liveaboardwithkids #sailingandlearning
