When we imagine a world thrown into chaos by an economic collapse or social anarchy, it’s tempting to think that guns and self-defense would be the most important tools for survival. However, history, particularly the experience of the Great Depression, teaches us that while security is important, the skills needed to survive-and even thrive-are much broader. Practical, everyday survival skills, such as cooking, sewing, and agriculture, were essential in the 1930s, and would be just as valuable today in the event of a societal breakdown.
In this article, we’ll explore the most important skills you would need to sustain yourself and your community if modern conveniences disappeared.

In addition to the points raised, I'd like to shed light on an often overlooked aspect - nautical skills. As a passionate sailor hailing from Florida, I feel that sailing could be a vital survival skill in certain scenarios. A sailboat is a self-sufficient entity, equipped with renewable energy sources like wind and solar, and potential access to an almost infinite supply of food from the sea. It can also serve as a safe shelter, mobile if need be. My sailboat, for instance, is also equipped with a desalination system, allowing me to convert seawater into potable water.
Moreover, the ocean routes can serve as a highway when the land routes are blocked or unsafe. Navigational skills, understanding of the weather patterns, and basic knowledge of boat repair and maintenance become important in such circumstances. While the sea offers its challenges, with the right skills, it can also provide a lifeline.
The resources provided here are excellent, and I would humbly suggest the addition of a section focused on basic sailing and boating skills, perhaps even touching on the liveaboard lifestyle for a more rounded perspective on post-collapse survival strategies.
In conclusion, the key to survival in a post-collapse society lies in diversity - the more varied our skills, the better our chances of thriving. Whether on land or sea, self-reliance and resilience are our best allies.
