We are very sorry, but due to the complexity of this article, an audio version is not available.

There are currently 103 titles on this list

Before I give you my list, I should explain my stance on post-apocalyptic entertainment.

Primarily, I like it realistic. I occasionally enjoy some simple action films (Mad Max), but mostly, they have to be an accurate representation of possible futures. You will find very few zombie movies on my list. Despite being a popular subject, zombies are just as realistic as vampires, demons, and similar fictitious creatures.

Ratings:

  • Green: definitely watch this!
  • Yellow: it's okay, and has some good points. If you're bored, go for it.
  • Red: Maybe keep a copy in your fallout bunker. Watch them when you've been locked in for a few years, you'll be desperate for ANYTHING to end the relentless boredom!!

Ahoy there readers,

As a prepper and an ardent lover of the sea myself, I found this article about post-apocalyptic movies to be both intriguing and relevant. The way these films illustrate human survival in the most dire of circumstances is something I've always found compelling, and it ties in nicely with the survivalist mindset I've adopted.

While I do appreciate the realism in most of these films, I think it's important to remember that their version of a post-apocalyptic scenario is still a fictional construct. As a sailor, I've learned that real survival often involves a deep understanding of your environment and the ability to adapt quickly and efficiently, whether on land or at sea.

For those of us in the prepper community, these films can serve as useful thought experiments, prompting us to consider our own survival strategies in the event of a large-scale disaster. For instance, my own SHTF plan involves using our sailboat as a bug-out option, heading out to sea if things get really bad on land.

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on how these movies might influence your own prepping strategies. Do you find them helpful, or do they simply serve as an entertaining escape?

Lastly, I'd suggest including "The Road" in your list. It's a post-apocalyptic movie that taps into the human spirit and the will to survive in a way that few others do.

Cheers,
Rowan Hawthorne

I think you may have missed it but "The Road" is in the list. And I agree it's a good film, it got an 80%.

Thanks for the comment though!

Ahoy there, fellow post-apocalyptic enthusiasts! I must commend this comprehensive list of end-of-the-world cinema! As someone who's been preparing for worst-case scenarios for a decade now, I've found these films to be an intriguing mix of entertainment and, at times, inspiration.

I particularly appreciate your emphasis on realism. Too often, these movies can drift into the realm of the fantastical, which, while entertaining, isn't as useful for us preppers. As someone who plans to sail away in case of an emergency, I’ve found films that accurately portray life at sea to be rare gems.

Hey y'all,

As a survivalist and prepper, I've watched my fair share of post-apocalyptic films, and I've gotta say, your comprehensive list and detailed analysis really hit it out of the park! I appreciate your focus on realism and your green-yellow-red rating system is a nice touch.

One thing I'd like to add from my perspective is the impact of these films on survivalism and preparedness. They often underline the importance of being ready for any situation, but can sometimes dramatize or oversimplify the real challenges of survival situations.

On another note, I've noticed that most of these films focus on land-based survival scenarios. As a sailor, I find it intriguing to think about survival situations in a maritime context. A movie like 'Waterworld', while not the most realistic, does start that conversation about survival on the sea. My family and I have a SHTF plan that involves using our well-equipped Catalina 34 sailboat.

I reckon it'd be great if you could consider adding a section discussing post-apocalyptic films with maritime or water-based scenarios. It could offer a different flavor to your already fantastic list.

Keep up the good work, and remember, stay prepared!

Best,
SailorBob

Thanks SailorBob,
From my experience, there's very few. I think the reason is, it would be a fairly boring post-apocalyptic film... the apocalypse happens, the family boards their boat and sails away from the disaster area... end of story. What's next, an hour and a half of them sailing to tropical islands, gathering fruit, fishing for free... not much of a post-apocalyptic movie.
The problem is, it's such a perfect escape plan that it wouldn't make for an interesting story. The idea that the world will end is so far-fetched. Just look at the list of movies and put yourself in them, but with a sailboat. In nearly every one, once you've sailed away from the mainland, the threat is over.

But if you know of any post-apocalyptic films with maritime or water-based scenarios, I'd be happy to add them.
